Information we collect

We collect only what we need to run SimpleGEO reliably.

1) Account information (if you create an account)

  • Email address and basic authentication details (to sign you in and secure your account).
  • Optional profile fields you provide in the app.

2) Usage & diagnostics

  • Basic server logs (timestamp, requested URL, response code, approximate IP/region, user agent).
  • Error/diagnostic events to troubleshoot issues and improve performance.

3) Public statistics displayed in the app

  • County-level statistics from public datasets (e.g., ACS/BLS) are not personal information.
  • We may cache derived values to improve load time.

How we use information

  • Operate the site: load pages, serve the map, and deliver rankings.
  • Secure the service: prevent abuse, detect attacks, and protect accounts.
  • Improve performance: identify slow endpoints and optimize load times.
  • Support: respond to issues you report.

Cookies & local storage

SimpleGEO may use cookies and browser storage to provide a smooth experience.

Authentication cookies

If login is enabled, we use cookies required to keep you signed in and protect your session.

Local storage (map pins)

When you pin counties on the map, we store those pins in your browser using localStorage: simplegeo:pins:v1.
You can remove pins anytime using the “Clear” button in the pinned panel or by clearing site data in your browser.

Sharing

We do not sell your personal information. We may share information only in limited cases:
  • Service providers: hosting/monitoring vendors that help run the site (subject to confidentiality).
  • Legal/security: if required by law, or to protect users and the service from abuse.

Data retention

  • We retain account data while your account remains active.
  • Operational logs are kept for a limited period and then removed or aggregated.
  • Map pins are stored locally in your browser unless you clear them.

Security

We use reasonable administrative, technical, and physical safeguards to protect data. No system is 100% secure, but we work to prevent unauthorized access and reduce risk.

Your choices

  • You can avoid providing optional information.
  • You can clear localStorage/cookies via your browser settings.
  • If your account system supports it, you can request account deletion.
